Decolonising Responses to ‘Engaged Art’: Disposability and Neoimperialism in Art, Activism and Academia

This article examines the limits of ‘engaged art’ via two case studies: Vik Muniz's photoseries Pictures Garbage (2008, Brazil) and Alejandro Cartagena's Carpoolers (2011–2012, Mexico). Both highlight an ongoing need to decolonise process narrative creation scholarship/viewership that responds this form art. By exploring different issues arise when considering alongside urgent scholarly approaches such works, authors consider literal metaphorical toxicity neoliberal societies, academic media discourses analysing art produced in context.
